Issued to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its Monaco timepiece, TAG Heuer has released five collectable timepieces inspired by the original. Is this the ultimate luxury gift set?
The iconic, ground-breaking design of the 1969 Monaco has made it a recognisable classic. The TAG Heuer Monaco was the first water-resistant square watch, and the first to feature an automatic-winding chronograph movement.
Each of the five anniversary Monaco watches represents a decade of the original design. The first (1969-1979) features a green dial with khaki green and brown undertones. The second decade (1979-1989) features a vibrant red dial that reflects the glamour of F1 during that era.

The third (1989-1999) is said to be an homage to the rise of video games, depicted by red and blue details on a grey dial, while the fourth decade (1999-2009) takes a modernistic approach, with a gloss black dial with white details and orange highlights.
Finally, the fifth decade (2009-2019) Tag Heuer Monaco sports a dramatic charcoal dial and black gold indexes.
Each watch is limited to 169 pieces. Powering the timepieces is the TAG Heuer Caliber 11.
To celebrate the launch the company hosted an exclusive party on the TAG Heuer yacht during the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix. Guests enjoyed cocktails, evening dinner and a live performance by DJ Bob Sinclair.
A box set of all five Monaco anniversary watches is available, priced at £49,995. Individual TAG Heuer Monaco timepieces are available from £6,000.

Huge fruit bats, with wingspans wider than you’d ever imagine, are gliding silently from the trees as darkness settles across the gardens, cutting shapes against the sky. I haven’t moved for fifteen minutes.…
