Chinese technology giant TCL is stepping up its mobile game, with the brand’s new P80 smartphones embracing higher-end features without sacrificing the value proposition that helped it carve a niche in the first place.
Unveiled at the IFA tech expo in Berlin, the TCL P80 Ultra and TCL P80 Pro are the first smartphones we’ve seen to feature NXTPAPER AMOLED, a display innovation that combines the colour and contrast characteristics of AMOLED with TCL’s pseudo e-ink NXTPAPER technology.
The flagship P80 Ultra features TCL’s most advanced smartphone camera to date, specifically a 50MP 3x periscope telephoto camera incorporating optical and electronic image stabilisation.
It comes with a MuseFilm mode that offers five built-in filters that let users change the look and feel of their snaps, without the need to delve into editing apps.

The 6.83-inch 1.5K NXTPAPER AMOLED display has a 120Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 3,200 nits. The 256GB model is available in Midnight Blue and Sunlit Gold, while the 512GB version adds Burgundy.
The step-down P80 Pro sheds the camera system but the display is the same as its bigger brother.
Completing the P80 range is the entry-level TCL P80. Unlike the P80 Ultra and P80 Pro, the TCL P80 doesn’t have NXTPAPER technology, just a regular 1.5K AMOLED display. Both the P80 and its Pro stablemate are available in Midnight Blue or Sunlit Gold.
The brand hasn’t forgotten tablets either, announcing a four-strong TAB A1 Series in Berlin.
The 11-inch TAB A1 and TAB A1 NXTPAPER are designed for portable entertainment and everyday use, while the 12.2-inch TAB A1 Plus and TAB A1 Plus NXTPAPER offer a larger screen for streaming and productivity.
The company is also introducing the TCL Kids Watch K5, positioned as a straightforward first connected watch for children and families.
