An Indian agave, recently launched in the UK, wants to woo you away from everyday tequilas. Maya Pistola, crafted from wild Agave Americana grown in Southern India, is making waves in the global agave‑spirits world.
The spirit was recently awarded ‘Spirit of the Year – India’ at the USA Spirits Ratings 2025.
This agave isn’t tequila (because tequila can only be made in specific regions of Mexico), rather it’s grown in red‑black volcanic soil of the Deccan Plateau, where it’s harvested at 8–10 years. It’s then distilled and aged with no additives. This quest for purity led Maya Pistola to coin the term ‘agavepura’ for the liquid.
The brand appears to have struck a note with drinkers. The first drop of Maya Pistola reached the UK just before Christmas and sold out in just 8 weeks.
Agave plants were first introduced to India, during British rule, over a century ago. They were apparently planted along railway lines to keep cattle away. India’s sun‑baked climate transpired to be ideal for the plant, leading to a booming agave‑spirits industry.
