Formula E is racing to Disney+, giving the electric-powered championship a global streaming platform as it enters its faster, more powerful GEN4 era.
Disney+, ESPN and Formula E have agreed a multi-year deal that will make Disney+ the home of live Formula E coverage in most international markets from the 2026/27 season. In the US, races will be available through Disney+ and ESPN+.
The agreement covers all 21 races across 13 events in the coming season. The championship begins in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on December 18 and visits cities including Austin, Miami, Monaco and Mexico City before reaching its finale in Tokyo on July 25 2027.
The deal is another significant step in turning Disney+ into a more substantial destination for live sport. The streamer already carries an expanding range of international sports, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup in South America, selected LALIGA football rights in several European markets, NBA games in the Philippines and the UEFA Women’s Champions League across Europe and Latin America.
The news also follows Disney’s recent partnership with the British Grand Prix for its Disney x Formula 1 ‘Fuel the Magic’ campaign.
The new season will also introduce an enhanced race-weekend format intended to ramp up the action…
Formula E enters GEN4 era
Formula E gives Disney a sport with a particularly strong technology angle, as the championship moves into its GEN4 era , which introduces a new generation of cars designed to push performance further. The cars will produce up to 600kW, equivalent to more than 815bhp, and are claimed to accelerate from 0-60mph in around 1.8 seconds.
That figure is likely to give the series a useful headline when the first GEN4 cars arrive on Disney+. Formula E says they will be the fastest and most powerful cars in its history. The new season will also introduce an enhanced race-weekend format intended to ramp up the action.
“Formula E combines world-class competition, groundbreaking technology, and sustainability in a way that’s unlike any other sport,” said Joe Earley, Co-President, Direct-to-Consumer, Disney Entertainment. “We’re excited to help power the championship’s next chapter on Disney+ and to give fans around the globe front row access to every adrenaline-fueled race as it happens.”
Subscribers will have access to practice, qualifying and race sessions, alongside preview and review programmes and race highlights.
Formula E to get its own Drive to Survive?
“This is a landmark moment for Formula E and reflects the incredible momentum behind our championship,” said Jeff Dodds, Chief Executive Officer of Formula E. “Disney’s unrivalled global reach and storytelling will introduce Formula E to millions of new fans while bringing them closer than ever to the drama, innovation and excitement of electric racing.”
Dodds points towards a wider relationship between the two companies. “As we enter the GEN4 era, this provides an exceptional platform to accelerate our global growth and continue building one of the world’s most exciting sports properties,” he said.
“We’re also excited by the opportunity to explore additional ways for Formula E and Disney to work together beyond live race coverage, creating even more innovative and engaging experiences for fans in the years ahead.”
That last point may prove particularly interesting. Disney has considerable experience turning sports properties into broader entertainment franchises through documentaries, studio programming and original series. Disney+ already carries ESPN’s 30 for 30 documentary collection and programmes including ESPN FC.
