Apple has confirmed a streaming date for its live‑action Matchboxmovie starring John Cena, expanding its growing action‑comedy slate.
Inspired by Mattel’s miniature die-cast cars, Matchbox The Movie follows a group of lifelong friends whose quiet lives are disrupted when their former leader, now undercover CIA agent Sean, returns home and drags them into an international race to save the world.
John Cena is in the driving seat, supported by Jessica Biel, Arturo Castro, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris, Danai Gurira, Golshifteh Farahani, Corey Stoll and Bill Camp. Behind the camera is Extraction director Sam Hargrave, whose action credentials suggest this will favour plenty of practical stunt work.
David Coggeshall pens the screenplay, while production duties are shared between Skydance Media and Mattel Studios.
The movie premieres globally on Apple TV+ on October 9, making it one of the platform’s headline releases for the autumn season.

Transformers The Movie remastered and back in cinemas
In related toy-to-movie news, Hasbro and Fathom Entertainment used the San Diego Comic-Con this weekend to announce that The Transformers: The Movie will return to cinemas from September 17 to mark its 40th anniversary. This isn’t simply a restored screening. The 1986 animated classic has been remastered in 4K and, for the first time, will feature an entirely new post-credits cinematic chapter created exclusively for its theatrical release.
For generations of fans, the original film remains one of the defining animated features of the decade, remembered as much for its rock soundtrack as for the controversial death of Optimus Prime. Hasbro appears happy to lean into that legacy. Its tongue-in-cheek ‘Apology Tour’, acknowledging the emotional scars left by that moment, continues with a worldwide theatrical rollout spanning the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, Germany and the United States.
Fans staying until the final frame will be rewarded with the exclusive new epilogue, while collectors can also expect themed popcorn buckets, drinkware and other cinema exclusives in selected venues.
Also look out for The Transformers: The Movie: The Soundtrack: The Reformatted Edition, featuring Sebastian Bach’s rendition of ‘Nothing’s Gonna Stand In Our Way’.
