Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery has released a new limited-edition single malt, the Aberfeldy 24 Year Old White Port Double Cask Finish, marking the latest addition to its Exceptional Cask whisky series.
The whisky pairs Aberfeldy’s Highland heritage with influence from Portugal’s Douro Valley, where the White Port casks used for finishing were sourced. Only 252 bottles have been produced.
That’s because White Port is made from white grapes and typically matured in stainless steel or neutral wood, preserving freshness rather than developing deep oxidative notes. When used for whisky finishing, White Port casks tend to impart bright orchard flavours and citrus. This compares to Ruby Port, which is aged in large vats to preserve its deep red colour and primary fruitiness. Ruby Port casks typically give whisky a jammy sweetness.
The steep terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley have long been celebrated for producing some of the world’s most distinctive fortified wines.
White port finishing has brought notes of citrus peel, stone fruits and delicate nuttiness…
A rare summer whisky exclusive
According to Malt Master Stephanie Macleod, White Port finishing has brought notes of citrus peel, stone fruits and delicate nuttiness, complementing rather than overwhelming the underlying character of the whisky.
“Port cask maturation is often known for bringing a lively character to whisky, but White Port offers something particularly fresh and vibrant,” said Macleod. “With this release, we wanted to capture something unexpected:”
The resulting expression is described as bright and elegant, with flavours of orchard fruits, apricots, citrus blossom and vanilla, intended to evoke the warmth and energy of summer while retaining the depth expected of a 24-year-old single malt.
This release continues Aberfeldy’s exploration of wine-cask finishing, following previous expressions matured in Tuscan red wine and Cadillac French wine casks. The distillery says these projects highlight how carefully selected wine casks can enhance its well-known honeyed style.
The new Aberfeldy White Port Double Cask edition is available exclusively from the distillery and its online shop, for £350, with visitors able to sample the whisky at the distillery bar for £13.
