Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part 2 has restored my faith in sci-fi blockbusters. It’s a huge, sprawling cinematic spectacle that makes the heart beat faster – a visceral experience that will leave you thoroughly sandblasted.
If its predecessor was a meticulous world builder, then this is the world beater. The action isn’t rationed, but served with brutal gusto. Dune: Part 2 straps you onto the back of a racing sandworm and doesn’t pause to let you off.

Dune 2 seamlessly picks up where the first film left off, following a vengeful Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and his scheming mother Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) as they navigate alliances with the native Fremen of Arrakis.
Villeneuve artfully balances the intricate plot, ensuring that viewers familiar with Herbert’s classic 1965 novel and those new to the saga can equally appreciate the depth of the narrative.
Timothée Chalamet brings depth and nuance to the screen, capturing the complexity of Atreides’ journey as he unites with Chani (Zendaya) and the Fremen on a path of revenge. His evolution from modest fighter to messiah anchors the film, providing a focal point amid Dune’s tongue-twisting grandiosity.
Dune: Part 2 is a welcome antidote to pop SF, where quips and needle drops have become the order of the day. Villeneuve masterfully weaves together politics, religion, and personal vendettas.
Production design and tech specs are similarly impeccable. The movie was filmed for IMAX by cinematographer Greig Fraser using IMAX certified Arri Alexa LF cameras. I caught it on a premium IMAX Laser screen, where it presents full frame, and the result looks nothing less than remarkable.
Hans Zimmer’s score is as epic as the sun-baked cinematography. An integral element of the Dune experience. Zimmer‘s ability to create emotive and powerful compositions is an essential contribution to the world of Arrakis. His score here is ominous, bone-shaking, and stirring.

The ensemble cast, featuring returning stars and new additions, feast on the script’s machinations. Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Dave Batista and Florence Pugh all impress, but perhaps it’s Austin Butler’s turn as sadistic psychopath Feyd-Rautha that leaves the greatest impression. Each character feels essential to the unfolding saga.
Dune: Part 2 is far more than a sequel, it’s a triumph for the genre – an action adventure of dazzling scale, breath-taking visuals, and intelligent, compelling storytelling. This is one day at the beach you won’t want to miss.
