Fabulous fusion: limited edition Courvoisier Mizunara 2023 is a cognac like no other

A bottle of Courvoisier Mizunara cognac against a background of barrels

Award-winning Cognac house, Maison Courvoisier, has announced the second edition of Courvoisier Mizunara, a unique fusion of French tradition and Japanese craftsmanship.

The liquid is a collaboration between Maison Courvoisier’s Seventh Chief Blender Thibaut Hontanx and the House of Suntory’s Fifth Generation Chief Blender, Shinji Fukuyo.

Drawing on their collective expertise in the art of blending, Hontanx and Fukuyo have traded techniques to create a rare cognac said to embody the very best of both cultures.

Only 500 bottles of Courvoisier Mizunara will be released, evidence of the rarity of Mizunara casks used and the Master Blenders’ meticulous attention to detail.

Each blend in this experimental series features only the best eaux-de-vie of the house from the region’s most prestigious crus, Grande Champagne, meticulously blended with Petite Champagne and Borderies for added complexity and depth.

Courvoisier Mizunara is aged in oak casks before being transferred to rare Japanese Mizunara oak casks, a wood notoriously difficult to work with, not least because the tree grows sideways and gnarled. The high moisture content also requires the wood to be over 200 years old before it can be crafted into a cask.

Intriguingly, this year’s prestige blend is said to showcase the influence of this Mizunara wood more overtly than its predecessor. Consider us intrigued.

A golden mahogany of hue, the 2023 Courvoisier Mizunara blend combines signature notes of rich fruits, with jasmine and cherry blossom, and an elegant floral finish.

The limited edition Courvoisier Mizunara is available now from Harvey Nichols, Harrods, and Selfridges, priced at £2,500.
