The stars of hit fantasy show Outlander may jump through time, but fans of the show will have to navigate streaming services if they want to watch its upcoming sixth season. Outlander is moving from Prime Video to StarzPlay.
Cast members Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe, Sophie Skelton, Lauren Lyle, César Domboy, and John Bell all return.
No date for its debut has been announced, although we are promised that weekly episodes will drop ‘early 2022’. Season six picks up where season five left off, with Jamie and a traumatised Claire returning to Fraser’s Ridge, even as the Revolutionary War looms. The season introduces the Fraser’s latest nemesis, the Christie family, who move to Fraser’s Ridge.
Adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling books, season six is based on material from the sixth book in the Outlander series, A Breath of Snow and Ashes. Starz has confirmed that the seventh season of Outlander will be based on the seventh of the eight books in the series, entitled An Echo in the Bone.
Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series has sold an estimated 50 million copies worldwide, with all of the books gracing the New York Times best-seller list.

Speaking at the Outlander panel at the New York Comic Con, Gabaldon described the upcoming season as “fabulous. It’s my favourite after Season one.”
Season six is the shortest so far, a fact largely attributed to the poor weather encountered during the shoot in Scotland (which doubles as North Carolina). “Even though there’s less episodes, it feels like there’s more,” reassures star Heughan.
The sixth season consists of eight episodes, with an extended feature length first episode. Fans can take solace from the fact that season seven is scheduled for a more expansive 16 episodes.
Executive producer Maril Davis said: “The weather has become like a character in the show. This year was particularly difficult. We had to move some scenes inside at the last minute. This is a show that wants to be outside. This year was tough for so many reasons, the weather, COVID. We just got hit really hard…”
