The show has also proved remarkably adept at shifting gears. Its mysteries are wrapped in character-led comedy, while individual episodes have played with everything from farce and noir to theatre and more emotional drama. The supporting casts have grown increasingly impressive, too, with Hollywood legends, Broadway stars and comedy favourites all finding their way into the world of the Arconia.
Season six, subtitled Only Murders in London, promises to shake up the formula by transporting the crime-solving trio to the home of the cosy murder mystery.
Inevitably, the detectives will find themselves navigating a new collection of suspicious characters, all with a distinctly English eccentricity. There’s also an intriguing question hanging over the new season. Can Charles, Oliver and Mabel follow in the footsteps of the woman whose podcast started them on this path without their own story ending the same way?
The transatlantic move opens the door to a particularly strong supporting cast. Alongside returning stars Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez, season six will feature Tina Fey and a formidable collection of guest stars including Olivia Colman, Meryl Streep, David Tennant, Nicola Coughlan and Martin Freeman.
The series comes from co-creators and writers Steve Martin and John Hoffman, whose previous work includes Grace & Frankie and Looking. The sixth season’s executive producers are Hoffman, Martin, Short, Gomez, Dan Fogelman, Jess Rosenthal, Ben Smith, Jennifer Crittenden and Gabrielle Allan.
There’s plenty of time to catch up if you’ve somehow yet to fall for the charming banter of Charles, Oliver and Mabel. All five previous seasons are available to stream on Disney+.
