Swatch’s new Big Bold bioceramic watches are a world-first for watchmaking

The Swatch biometric Big Bold collection in grey, blue, white, black and pink

When we want a fun watch that will bring life to any look, we turn straight to the masters: Swatch. Now, the watch brand has launched its latest ‘bioceramic’ Big Bold collection – and not only is it the coolest style accessory we’ll wear all summer, but they mark a world-first, too.

Swatch is no stranger to developing new and unique techniques, and ‘Bioceramic’ is the Swiss watchmaker’s latest innovation, presenting a new era of sustainability and design in watchmaking. Having only launched its first watch made using bio-sourced plastic in September 2020, this latest material is a first-of-its-kind mix of ceramic and bio-sourced plastic – and we can’t wait to wear it.

Made from two-thirds ceramic and one-third bio-sourced plastic, the new bioceramic is both soft and silky to the touch, while remaining resilient and resistant for everyday wear.

The all-new material is showcased perfectly in this week’s newly-launched collection. It’s part of the brand’s signature Big Bold family of designs, known for its large watch face and hands. In keeping with the Big Bold range, the new collection boasts a deep and architecturally structured 47mm diameter case: the perfect model to appreciate the exciting new biometric characteristics to the fullest, while the bracelet, glass and loops are all made from bio-sourced plastic.

Of course, the design also features the signature clear Swatch face, giving a colour-block cool glimpse at this nifty design piece’s inner workings.

It’s not even an exaggeration to say that this new material presents the future of watchmaking. Or at least, it does for Swatch, as the watchmaker says that by the end of 2021, all key Swatch product lines will be exploring the use of the bioceramic material – watch this space.

As exciting as the all-new material is, we’re just as hyped about the summer-ready colour schemes of the new collection. Available in five colour ways: classic black and white, the “colour of the year” grey, optimistic sky-blue and a new power-pink, not only is it innovative, but it’s playful, too – just as we’d expect from Swatch.

Plus, because of the block colouring to the bracelet, face and mechanism, no matter how vibrant you opt for, the accessory is impressively wearable. Which is fortunate, because we’ll be wearing it al fresco all summer long.
