LG will introduce its first QNED Mini LED backlit TVs during 2021, as part of an LCD TV range refresh.
These new sets TVs herald a giant leap forward in LCD TV picture quality, says the brand. Combining Quantum Dot and NanoCell technologies with a self-emissive Mini LED light source, brightness and contrast are said to eclipse that of conventional LCD TVs.
LG will position QNED just under OLED, saying it’s not a replacement for OLED, but an additional new choice in premium TV technologies.
The LG announcement follows a similar reveal by rival Samsung, which will also introduce Mini LED TVs in 2021, in the form of Neo QLED screens.

It’s not clear yet how the two TV technologies compare directly, and thanks to Pandemic restrictions, we’ll have to wait some time before comparing them in the flesh.
LG says we can expect QNED Mini LED QNED TVs to deliver accurate colours and more profound blacks, than regular Nanocell LED LCD TVs. The screens will also offer high frame rate support up to 120Hz, making them an attractive option for next-gen gamers.
The LG Mini LED execution comprises around 30,000 tiny LEDs, used to produce precise HDR high peak brightness and a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1.
“Our new QNED Mini LED series is a premium home entertainment option that expands and improves the LCD TV space and gives consumers another terrific viewing choice,” declares Nam Ho-jun, senior vice president of R&D at LG’s Home Entertainment Company. “These TVs deliver an experience that set them apart from other LCD TVs and speak to our commitment to innovation and pushing the standard forward.”
LG’s 2021 LED LCD TV line-up will include 10 new 4k and 8k models covering a wide range of large screen sizes of up to 86-inches.
