Dolby Atmos will debut in the latest BMW 7 Series, marking the introduction of three-dimensional sound to one of the carmaker’s flagship models. Revealed at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition (Auto China 2026), the move forms part of a wider rollout that will see immersive audio extended across future vehicles in the BMW range.
The integration reflects a growing emphasis on in-car entertainment, as manufacturers seek to position the vehicle cabin as a connected media space.
By incorporating Dolby Atmos, BMW aims to offer drivers and passengers a more detailed and spatial listening experience, supported in the 7 Series by advanced audio systems developed in partnership with Bowers & Wilkins.
Atmos allows artists and engineers to place sounds in a three-dimensional space, creating a more enveloping and nuanced experience for music, movies and games.
For many buyers, what happens inside the cabin now carries as much weight as performance figures or drivetrain technology. It’s a change that underlines how the modern luxury car is evolving into an entertainment sanctuary.

The 7 Series is the first BMW to feature Bowers & Wilkins audio for a second consecutive generation. With the introduction of two audio system levels, BMW customers now have access to high performance Bowers & Wilkins audio in every available model of the new 7 Series.
The optional Diamond Surround Sound System is formidable, with up to 36 speakers and 1,965 watts of amplification distributed throughout the cabin. Diamond dome tweeters, headrest-mounted drivers and roof-integrated channels work together to create a layered, three-dimensional soundstage, while tactile transducers embedded in the seats add a physical dimension to low-frequency effects. The diamond high-frequency dome is very light and extremely rigid, resulting in a sound that combines studio-grade accuracy with minimal distortion.
Acoustically optimised stainless-steel grilles and carefully positioned drivers ensure consistent sound quality across all seating positions. Subtle illumination accents the speaker housings.
The standard Surround Sound Bowers & Wilkins system is no slouch, either. It features up to 18 speakers and 655 watts of power. Aluminium tweeters handle high frequencies with precision, while Continuum midrange cones, developed over several years, focus on vocal clarity and tonal accuracy.
An all-new woofer configuration is deployed in both the standard Surround Sound and Diamond Surround Sound System. Dual-balanced woofers, as found on the brand’s PV1D and the DB Series subwoofers, use two cones arranged in an opposed, balanced configuration to greatly reduce unwanted vibration and controlled bass at higher volumes.
Listeners can enjoy the sound system through four different sound modes according to preference, while an impressive Theatre Screen display in the rear offers in-car entertainment coupled to surround sound.
The introduction of Dolby Atmos in the 7 Series is expected to extend to the forthcoming iX3 Long Wheelbase, as the company builds out a portfolio of vehicles designed with immersive entertainment in mind.
In Prisoner, the new high octane thriller from Sky, a prison transport officer and a contract killer partner in a race across the country, after a violent ambush leaves them handcuffed together and pursued by ruthless criminals. It’s an outlandish premise but the show moves at such a breakneck pace, you’ll barely have time to…
