Chicome review: This Mexican fusion restaurant is the real jewel of Tower Bridge

Tacos at Chicome restaurant Tower Bridge London

London has plenty of landmarks – but the best reason to visit Tower Bridge might just be dinner. We learned as much when we visited Chicome for the first time recently, an upscale Mexican-South American fusion restaurant right by the iconic Tower of London and with prime views over pretty St Katherine’s Dock.

Despite its plum location in the middle of Tower Bridge, Chicome actually makes you forget you’re in one of the busiest tourist hotspots in the world, thanks to its sleek design, stylish, inventive plates, and a buzz that feels distinctly modern London.

Step outside and you’ve got the Tower of London and the Thames at your feet – but inside, it’s all about refined Mexican flavours and outrageously good cocktails (and you must try the coconut margarita). Whether flying in for a city break or playing tourist for the day, Chicome is our new go-to Tower Bridge eaterie. A crown jewel, indeed.

Sea trout at Chicome restaurant London

Inspired by the fresh summer dishes of Mexico and South America, Chicome’s menu is made for sharing – and for a foodie Instagram story or three. Case in point: the sea trout tiradito with yuzu tiger’s milk, where sashimi-grade trout is curled into rose-shaped petals and laid delicately on avocado cream and hibiscus gel. It’s undoubtedly something special; the sauce is poured at the table for maximum drama, and it’s as exquisite to eat as it is to look at.

Crab tacos at Chicome London

Next on our visit came the crab and red caviar baby gem taco, a lettuce wrap that was light, bright and bursting with amarillo mayo, garlic and chives. Fresh and moreish, we could easily have had ten – but to our delight, there were more flavours to discover yet.

Jostling for the crown here as most addictive small plate also were the prawn and jalapeño croquetas. Crisp and golden on the outside with gloriously molten béchamel within, these are served with a guajillo chilli cream and begging to be paired with a margarita – so naturally, we did.

We can confirm, it would be a crime to come here and skip the margaritas – and be careful, as the Tower of London is just steps away. The Spicy Margarita packs a jalapeño punch with El Rayo Tequila, Cointreau, agave and full of citrus – and, not mention, fiery enough to keep up with those croquetas. For something smoother, the Coconut Margarita is sunshine in a glass: El Jimador Tequila balanced with lime, agave and a creamy coconut note. Both are dangerously drinkable.

Also worth noting: the slow-cooked short rib tacos, rich from five hours of cooking, cut perfectly with pineapple salsa; and the chef’s favourite yellowfin tuna tostadas, crisp and sashimi-fresh with a soy kick. Chicome, we quickly learn, is small-plate heaven.

Hake fillet at Chicome London

Between the margaritas and small plates, though, we advise you save room for a larger main too – and if you order one main dish, make it the hake fillet with salsa guerito y coco. The grilled skin-on hake arrives on chipotle-sautéed vegetables with a coconut and amarillo salsa that’s spicy and silky, topped with a kale chicharron for crunch. It’s a signature dish here for a reason – it’s spectacular to look at, and even better to eat.

Guava cheescake at Chicome restaurant

Dessert is by no means an afterthought, either. The chilli chocolate tart layers Oaxacan chocolate with ancho chilli and a mezcal whipped cream. It’s a grown-up chocolate cake, not too sweet and finishes with a kick. We also try the guava cheesecake, which makes for a tropical twist on a classic, creamy and tangy with a lime gel which cuts through the rich cream. Edible petals give both dishes a picture-perfect final flourish that we can’t get enough of – and neither can our camera rolls.

Chicome isn’t just good-for-a-tourist-area. It’s one of the best restaurants around Tower Bridge. The food is refined yet fun, the drinks list is bold and balanced, and the setting makes it feel like a discovery even in the shadow of London’s most famous landmarks. Whether you’re visiting the city, or looking for your next date night spot, add Chicome to your must-visit list now – and don’t skip the margaritas.
