Five star Cornish retreat, Treloyhan Manor, is set to host an extraordinary tasting event this month, offering whisky connoisseurs the chance to sample what is believed to be the UK’s oldest whisky flight. Curated by House of Hazelwood, the flight comprises six rare and aged Scotch whiskies, boasting a combined heritage of 254 years.
The tasting will take place on Saturday July 19 and is limited to just 36 guests. The event is priced at £500 per head, with hotel residents able to attend for a discounted rate of £250.
Each of the whiskies selected for the flight represents a different facet of Scotland’s rich distilling tradition, drawn from the extensive House of Hazelwood archive.
The whisky flight in detail
The Cask Trials – 53 Year-Old Single Grain Scotch Whisky Distilled in 1968 and matured for over half a century in a single sherry butt, this 49.2% ABV release from Girvan is reportedly rich and textural. With just 303 bottles worldwide, expect a pour that’s complex, dark, and satisfyingly intense.
The Garden at Hazelwood – 47 Year-Old Blended Malt Scotch Whisky A tribute to the Gordon family estate, stewards of the collection for over seven decades, this 45.8% ABV expression, limited to 137 examples, is described as fragrant with lavender and orchard fruit.
The Lost Estate – 43 Year-Old Blended Grain Scotch Whisky Drawn from now-closed grain distilleries, this 41.6% ABV whisky blends the characteristics of a bygone era into something delicate yet resonant. Limited to 564 bottles worldwide.
A Trail of Smoke – 42 Year-Old Blended Malt Scotch Whisky Evocative of Scotland’s island distilleries, this 46.5% ABV malt is lightly peated, herbal, fruity, and softly smoky. Limited to 385 bottles, it’s a clearly a nuanced dram, for contemplative sipping.
The Lowlander – 36 Year-Old Blended Scotch Whisky This 45.9% ABV whisky shines a rare light on Lowland distillation, often overshadowed by its Highland and Island peers. Bright, mineral, and lightly sweet, only 432 bottles were ever made.
The Tops – 33 Year-Old Blended Malt Scotch Whisky A blend of House of Hazelwood’s finest ‘tops’, the very best malts from its inventory, this 51.6% ABV dram is as luxurious as it is scarce. Richly sherried and indulgent, its 528 bottles are likely to disappear quickly among collectors.
An unique experience
Jonathan Gibson, Director at House of Hazelwood, describes the event as “an invitation to experience history in a glass,” while James Hemming, Operations Director at Treloyhan Manor, calls it “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” that aligns perfectly with the hotel’s ethos of offering rare and memorable experiences.
