The Godzilla franchise has come a long way since the iconic lizard first made his debut in 1954, in Gojira. From the rubber-suited giant stomping through cardboard cityscapes to more modern CGI spectacles, the franchise has evolved with the times and lost none of its fantastical appeal.
Set after the epic showdown between Godzilla and the Titans that left San Francisco in ruins and unveiled the existence of monsters, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters follows two siblings as they follow in their father’s footsteps and unearth their family’s mysterious connection to Monarch, a shadowy organisation.
The story unfolds in two timelines: the 1950s and half a century later. In this narrative dance, we meet Army officer Lee Shaw, played by Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell, who share knowledge that could spell doom for Monarch…
This new streaming spectacle is a result of a collaboration between Chris Black, Matt Fraction, Matt Shakman (who also directs the first two episodes), Joby Harold, Tory Tunnell from Safehouse Pictures, Andy Goddard, Brad Van Arragon, and Andrew Colville.
Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita from Toho Co., the owner of the Godzilla character, also serve as executive producers.
Legendary Entertainment’s Monsterverse first unfolded with Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island, in 2014 and 2017. It continued with Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019 and the grand showdown in Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021.
The Monsterverse has amassed nearly two billion dollars globally, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down. There’s another sequel, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, already on the horizon.
The Monsterverse can also be found on Netflix, with kidult animated series Skull Island.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will debut on Apple TV+ as a 10-episode series, expanding the streaming platform’s offerings in the world-building drama category.
With global hits like Silo, Foundation, based on Isaac Asimov’s novels, and Invasion, Apple TV+ is fast becoming a must-have streaming service for discerning sci-fi fans.
