Those returning to the David Lloyd Club in Northwood, West London, are in for a big surprise. Renowned for group exercise, tennis and swimming, the expansive health club now boasts a new luxury pool and spa garden area, to compliment its yoga, Pilates and meditation lifestyle classes.
Naturally, TLR had to visit this premium fitness facility to take a closer look.
David Lloyd Clubs now offers Spa Retreats at seven clubs. In addition to David Lloyd Northwood, you’ll find them at David Lloyd Royal Berkshire, David Lloyd Farnham, David Lloyd Chigwell, David Lloyd Purley, David Lloyd Cambridge and David Lloyd Cheadle.
“It’s an area for relaxation,” says General Manager Ian Lancaster, as he introduces us to his new wellness retreat. “When the weather’s particularly nice, we open the bar and fire pit…”
In addition to this outdoor space, there’s a new Indoor Spa Retreat. “We have hot beds, plunge pool, saltwater hydropool, Amethyst crystal and citrus steam rooms, and ice fountain” says Lancaster. With mood lighting, and ambient music playing, the design and vibe is akin to the facilities in a luxury hotel – albeit on a larger scale.

New members that want to access the area need to have Platinum Spa membership. It seems a very worthwhile investment.
And that’s not all. The Spa Garden overlooks a new 20m outdoor pool (there’s an indoor pool too, naturally). Nearby are freshly erected open sided marquee tents designed to accommodate members wanting group sessions.
Space is a luxury David Lloyd Clubs can obviously afford. The Northwood facility boasts 14 indoor and five outdoor tennis courts, three badminton courts and two squash courts.
“We’ve commandeered some of the indoor court space for gym equipment, it’s proving really popular,” says Lancaster.

5 tips to get gym ready after a break, by an expert
Visiting a gym can be an intimidating experience at the best of times. After months of inactivity, this trepidation can only be more acute. So what do we need to do to get gym ready?
Mark Goodman (pictured top and below) is a personal trainer at the Northwood club. We asked him for his top tips to restore gym confidence and the kit you’ll need if you’re just starting out…
Get into the right mindset: “Think of this as a reset…”
“I think it’s just a case of taking the next opportunity, you have to start training again. If we miss an opportunity, that’s fine – take your next one. It’s just a case of getting started, especially if you’ve not been able to train through the lockdown periods. Don’t worry about where you are now compared to where you were before, because that’s going to potentially hinder you from getting healthier and fitter.”

“Build your volume, and ease yourself in…”
“If you haven’t been able to train over lockdown, ease yourself in. Reduce your volume, the amount of weight that you’re lifting over your sessions. Lift lighter loads. If you’re someone who has been training throughout lockdown, you probably want to kind of get back to where you were at the start, so try to get back to the same volume in maybe in the first week or two.”
Kit basics: for workout newbies – what gym kit do you need?
“With regard to kit and working out at home, you don’t need much at all: there’s so many things that you can do with bodyweight alone; a mat for a lot of core based exercises and bodyweight movements; a skipping rope is awesome, especially when the weather is a little bit nicer. For those that may be a bit more experienced with weight training, a kettlebell is a great option. But for a beginner, bodyweight and a mat is more than sufficient.”

Building body confidence: the joy of running and skipping rope
“I’m a massive fan of running, I’m a running enthusiast. I’m sure many people during lockdown have done the same thing, they’ve hit the streets and given running a go.
“I also love a skipping rope, especially now we’re coming into summer. Skipping rope, kettlebell and my bodyweight is all I need. I love that style of training. A lot of people love dumbbells, love their weight training. I’m partial to weight training as well – but to be honest, it’s just about being active with your steps. A lot of us in lockdown have had the opportunity to increase our steps, which is going to improve overall health and well being.”
Feet don’t fail me now – invest in the right footwear
“Everything that we do, when it comes to movement and exercise, comes from the floor, so footwear is the most important thing in training. It’s massively undervalued and overlooked. Especially when you’re looking at cycling or running, footwear is crucial. It’s going to help support your ankle, knee joints and make you run more effectively and avoid injury. Footwear is incredibly important, whether you’re weightlifting in the gym, cycling, whatever the activity, you’ve got to have the right footwear.
“The main thing that you’ll want from trainers is something that’s comfortable, with a little bit of cushioning. If you want to take it a little more seriously, and get into bio-mechanics, you can always have a look at getting a gait analysis done.”
All 79 David Lloyd Clubs in England offer group exercise, tennis and swimming, following the reopening of outdoor facilities in Scotland and Wales. See davidlloyd.co.uk for further details including new joining offers.
