Amazon has a ball with new Alexa Echo smart speakers, updates sound and design

Amazon has refreshed its Echo line of Alexa smart speakers, with new designs and feature enhancements.

The latest Echo, Echo Dot, and Echo Dot with clock all feature a spherical design, while the Echo Show 10 also promises a more natural interaction with Alexa, using ‘intelligent motion’ so that the display moves with you.

Alexa has also had a smart update, that allows for more intuitive conversation (this applies to all Alexa devices, not just the new models).

The new spherical Echo moves away from the familiar pillar design, and offers stereo sound plus a built-in Zigbee hub, for control of compatible smart home devices.

Alexa gets a new look for fall 2020

The unit’s light rings has also been relocated to the base of the fabric sphere, allowing it to reflect off of surfaces.

Inside is a 3-inch woofer and dual-firing tweeter. As with the larger Dolby Atmos Echo Studio, this new Echo automatically senses the acoustics of your space and fine-tunes audio playback for maximum performance. It also supports the Bluetooth Low Energy standard.

The diminutive Echo Dot drops its puck look and adopts a matching spherical design and fabric finish, but employs a single 1.6-inch front-firing speaker. The ‘with clock’ iteration has an LED time display with ‘tap to sleep’ functionality.

The new Echo Show 12 screens tracks your movement

The new rotating Echow Show 10 utilises a brushless motor and claims to be completely silent, so you won’t hear the display as it tracks your movement. A 13MP wide-angle camera pans and zooms to keep you at the centre of the frame.

The new Show 10 doesn’t just look different, the display moves too, so do its dual, front-firing tweeters and woofer. This motion functionality is optional. If you don’t like the idea of the show tracking your movements, it can be disabled.  The Show 10 is also getting Netflix support, playback and search by voice.

The Echo Show 10 (£239.99) will be available in Charcoal and Glacier White, and will launch later this year.

The puck is outta here

The updated Echo (£89.99) and Echo Dot (£49.99) will be available in Charcoal, Glacier White, and Twilight Blue. Echo Dot with clock (£59.99) comes in Glacier White and Twilight Blue. Pre-order starts today with new devices shipping later this year.
