Hibiki collaborates with waterfall artist Hiroshi Senju for limited edition 21 and 30 Year Old whiskies

Hibiki 21 YO Hiroshi Senju edition whisky

The House of Suntory is uniting the worlds of fine art and fine spirits, with a collaboration between its acclaimed Japanese blended whisky Hibiki and internationally renowned painter Hiroshi Senju. The partnership is marked by the release of two collector’s editions – the Hibiki 21 Year Old and the Hibiki 30 Year Old – presented in bespoke packaging designed by Senju.

Founded in 1923, the House of Suntory is Japan’s original whisky distiller, and its Hibiki expression, introduced in 1989, represents the pinnacle of the brand’s blending philosophy.

Combining malt whiskies from Yamazaki and Hakushu with grain spirit from Chita, Hibiki and is often cited as a liquid reflection of Japan’s balance between nature and craftsmanship.

New blends a work of art

Hiroshi Senju, known worldwide for his monumental waterfall paintings, brings a similar reverence for natural beauty to his work. Exhibited in institutions such as the V&A and New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, his paintings explore the relationship between movement, stillness, and the natural world.

This collaboration with Hibiki centres on a new work titled Waterfall on Colors ‘Hibiki’, featuring ten shades of purple inspired by Kokimurasaki, a traditional Japanese colour that symbolises nobility and rarity.

Senju’s technique involves filling canvas panels with water, hokaimatsu, a natural marble powder, and allowing the flow of water to guide the colours freely.

The design graces the presentation boxes of both limited editions. For the Hibiki 21 Year Old, Senju’s flowing imagery adorns the label and box. The Hibiki 30 Year Old takes the concept further, presented in a traditional byōbu-style case, essentially a folding screen that transforms the bottle into an heirloom display piece.

Complete with a reflective base, etched emblem, and crystal bottle with waterfall motif, the edition reflects the Japanese ideal of Miyabi, or refined elegance.

Produced in limited quantities, the Hibiki 21 YO is said to offer a blooming roundness, harmonising honeycomb, sandalwood, and dried apricot, with gentle layers of Mizunara oak leading to a long, incense-like finish.

The Hibiki 30 YO, according to official tasting notes, reveals deep and resonant flavours of brown sugar, dried fig, gingerbread, and apricot jam, unfolding with notes of cinnamon and a lasting warmth.

The Hibiki 21 Year Old Artist Collaboration with Hiroshi Senju is priced at £750, and the Hibiki 30 Year Old edition at £6,240. Both are available from select luxury retailers including Harrods, Berry Bros. & Rudd, and The Whisky Shop.
