The Macallan has unveiled the fourth release in its annual A Night on Earth series, The First Light, a limited-edition single malt Scotch whisky inspired by New Zealand’s New Year celebrations and the symbolic arrival of the first sunrise of the year.
The 2025 release continues The Macallan’s exploration of global festive traditions, following previous editions that paid homage to Scotland, Spain, and the journey home. This new expression is said to capture the optimism and warmth of the Southern Hemisphere’s summer festivities – the clinking of glasses by beach bonfires, the scent of Manuka honey in the air, and the promise of a new beginning.
Crafted by The Macallan Whisky Mastery Team, A Night on Earth: The First Light was matured in a combination of sherry seasoned American and European oak casks, with a small portion of ex-bourbon American oak to introduce a lighter, sweeter dimension. The result, says The Macallan, is a delicate yet expressive whisky that reflects both the brand’s Scottish roots and the Antipodean inspiration behind this release.

The Macallan A Night on Earth: First Light tasting notes
Bottled at 43% ABV, it promises a rounded, elegant profile, approachable yet complex, ideal for festive sipping or pairing with a pavlova or other fruit-based desserts.
Whisky Maker Russell Greig describes this edition as “about light, its cultural symbolism and its sensory warmth,” adding that it’s designed to be “gifted, shared, and enjoyed with friends and family.”
While the whisky has yet to reach the tasting rooms of The Luxe Review, The Macallan’s own tasting notes suggest an inviting dram that balances sweetness and spice. On the nose, expect toasted sweet oak, caramelised marshmallows, icing sugar, rich vanilla extract, and berry compote. Flavours include rich caramel, mellow baking spices, vanilla ice cream, pavlova, icing sugar, stone fruits, and hints of coconut and Manuka honey.
The finish is said to be sweet and fruity, with mellow spice and toasted oak.
Every cask for The First Light was individually selected and nosed by The Macallan’s Whisky Mastery Team, reportedly undergoing an average of 636 sensory checks before bottling.
The ‘A Night on Earth’ series is also as much about artistry as it is about flavour. Each edition features bespoke artwork by a local artist reflecting that region’s New Year traditions. For First Light, The Macallan collaborated with New Zealand illustrator Bonnie Brown, whose evocative designs, depicting coastal barbecues, beach bonfires, and blooming Pōhutukawa trees, wrap the bottle and packaging.
Brown said the project reminded her of “family New Year’s rituals, starting the day at the beach and taking a swim in the ocean. It embodies the Kiwi way of life that I grew up with, celebrating nature and the outdoors.”
The Whisky Exchange has dropped three new exclusive bottlings to mark the start of 2026, spanning Scotch whisky, American bourbon and Jamaican rum. The limited collection comprises an experimental single-cask Torabhaig from the Isle of Skye, a punchy single-barrel bourbon from Bardstown Bourbon Company, and a sherry-cask-aged Hampden Estate rum that leans fully into the…
