Technics celebrates six decades with limited-edition flagship earbuds in Champagne Gold

Technics, the legendary Japanese audio marque with vinyl running through its veins, is celebrating its 60th birthday the best way it knows how: by dressing up its flagship earbuds for the occasion.

Enter the EAH-AZ100 60th Anniversary Edition, resplendent in a Champagne Gold finish.

Not simply a new lick of paint, but a nod to six decades (not including a short hiatus) of uncompromising sonic ambition, now distilled into something you can stick in your ears. Because in the world of audio, anniversaries matter.

Technics AZ100 earbuds in champagne gold

Lauded at launch, the EAH-AZ100s remain standout performers in the crowded true wireless market. Designed for purists and critical listeners, they’re packed with audio engineering firsts. With the introduction of this limited-edition colourway, the AZ100s also cater to those who want their tech to look as bling as it sounds.

Champagne Gold joins the existing Black and Silver options. Underneath the new shiny exterior lies the same remarkable engineering that made these Technics buds such a serious proposition in the first place.

Technical excellence under the hood

The EAH-AZ100’s big calling card is its Magnetic Fluid Driver, which puts oily magnetic liquid (which has actually been around for some time in audio circles) to fresh use between the driver’s voice coil and magnet.

The result is less mechanical resistance, reduced distortion, and a more faithful rendering of the audio signal. Basically, you hear less of the hardware and more of the music.

Paired with a thin free-edge driver design and aluminium diaphragm, the result is high-resolution sound with tightly controlled bass and clean, extended highs.

On the noise-cancelling front, the AZ100s utilise Technics’ Adaptive Noise Cancelling, able to adjust not just to the sound around you, but to the shape of your ears, cutting low- and mid-frequency noise with admirable precision.

And then there’s Voice Focus AI, which combines three microphones with intelligent processing to make your calls more audible. Background noise is analysed and suppressed, allowing your voice to cut through with welcome clarity.

Significantly, the EAH-AZ100s also offer Dolby Head Tracking and spatial audio support, for a more immersive listening experience. Head tracking reorients the soundstage based on head movement, keeping the audio presentation fixed in space.

There’s also support for Bluetooth LE Audio, Auracast, and multi-point connectivity for up to three devices, an industry first. Need to jump from laptop to phone to tablet on the fly? The AZ100s have you covered.

Battery life is healthy, up to 10 hours from the buds themselves, and 28 hours including the case. Wireless charging via Qi, Google Fast Pair support, and the Technics Audio Connect app round out a user-friendly feature set.

Technics EAH-AZ100 60th Anniversary Edition earbuds are priced at £259 (€299).

These Écoute TH1 Bluetooth valve headphones are inspired by classic audio gear

High-end headphone design rarely strays far from established norms, but Écoute Audio is taking a different route with its TH1. These £900 wireless headphones attempt something unusual: translating the architecture of classic audiophile Hi-Fi into a wearable form. At first glance, they look like a premium pair of over-ears. Look closer, and it becomes clear…
