In an inspired nod to its legacy, Timex is celebrating the 170th anniversary of its iconic Waterbury watch with a special limited-edition release priced at just £1 – analogous to what it would have cost over a century ago.
Known as “the watch that made the dollar famous,” this nostalgic re-release promises to delight watch enthusiasts, design lovers, and vintage aficionados alike. Even literary giant Mark Twain once famously purchased his own Timex Waterbury with a dollar, sending remuneration in a letter to the company as payment.

Timex’s roots go back to 1854 with the founding of the Waterbury Clock Company, which became a pioneer in affordable timekeeping. At a time when pocket watches were a luxury reserved for the wealthy, Waterbury democratised timekeeping with its Yankee pocket watch, accessible to working-class Americans at an unprecedented price.
Farmers, conductors, and factory workers across the country relied on the brand’s accurate and affordable watches, and by the early 1900s, millions of these watches were part of daily life.
For this 170th-anniversary edition, Timex has crafted a piece that both honours tradition and meets contemporary standards. The watch features a clean ice-white dial adorned with Roman numeral markers in a distinctive 3D lacquered finish. A commemorative 170th Anniversary logo graces the face, and the case back is engraved to mark this milestone, merging Timex’s classic style with an updated elegance.
With only 1,000 pieces available worldwide, the Timex 170th Anniversary watch will be released on November 16. Available for £1 on the Timex website and at Frasers in Meadowhall, this limited-edition piece is likely to sell out quickly, offering a rare piece of history at an unbelievable price.
