By invitation only: Stunning dual chamber whisky set features The Macallan’s oldest ever Single Malt

The Macallan Collection angled

In celebration of its 200th anniversary, The Macallan has unveiled the Time: Space Collection, two remarkable new offerings in bespoke packaging.

The first release, Time: Space, comprises two liquids, one the oldest whisky release in Macallan history, a rare 84-year-old single malt from 1940.

It’s joined by the first whisky distilled at The Macallan’s new state-of-the-art distillery, a 5-year-old single malt from 2018. Only 200 sets of this dual-chamber release are being produced, making it a coveted treasure indeed.

The unique dual chamber vessel is said to symbolise the delicate balance between past and future. The outer chamber holds the 1940 vintage, while the inner chamber contains the 2018 bottling.

The 1940 vintage, aged in a first-fill American oak butt and a second-fill European oak butt, both seasoned with sherry in Jerez de la Frontera, is bottled at 43.6% ABV. The 2018 vintage has a higher 54.9% ABV.

The Time: Space vessel itself is displayed in an oak sculpture crafted from alternating layers of American and European oak, a tribute to The Macallan’s commitment to sherry-seasoned oak casks.

Tasting Notes for The Macallan Time: Space

The nose on the 84 year old release is said to offer an enticing bouquet of dark chocolate-coated ginger, sticky dates, and leather, underscored by antique oak, aromatic peat, and a whisper of ground coffee. The palate opens with charred pineapple and baked peaches, transitioning to crystallised ginger, aniseed, blackberry jam, and sweet woodsmoke. Rich resinous notes and caramelised sugar are said to add further complexity.

The finish is reported to be exceptionally long, with notes of dark chocolate and toasted oak.

When it comes to the 2018 Vintage, the tasting notes speak of green apples and ripe pears on the nose, complemented by sticky toffee, honey, vanilla custard, and soft woodspice. On the palate we’re told to expect sultanas and baked apples, buttery pastry and hints of lemon, lime, and vanilla. The finish is creamy and sweet.

Introducing The Macallan Time: Space Mastery edition

In addition to the dual-chamber Time: Space, The Macallan is introducing Time: Space Mastery, a single malt crafted from 14 cask types, including European and American oak sherry-seasoned casks, American oak bourbon casks, and refill casks.

This whisky is presented in a circular vessel, within a red presentation case, adorned with 200 spikes representing the distillery’s bicentennial.

Tasting Notes for The Macallan Time: Space Mastery

On the nose, Mastery melds the aromas of Medjool dates, sweet baked figs, and milk chocolate. Sipping reveals sherry-soaked dried fruits, marmalade, and honeycomb, with soft spiced notes of ginger and cinnamon. The finish lingers with caramelised pineapple, chocolate and coffee.

The Macallan’s Time: Space double pack is available exclusively through invitation, with pricing upon application.

Time: Space Mastery will be available for purchase through The Macallan, and via The Macallan Society Ballot in the UK and Europe.
