From canvas to screen: Samsung brings surrealist paintings of Salvador Dalí to The Frame TV

A Samsung Frame TV displaying Salvador Dalí's The Persistence of Memory

The works of celebrated surrealist Salvador Dalí are coming to Samsung’s hugely popular Frame TV for the first time, following the announcement of a partnership with Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí.

Twelve of Dalí’s most mesmerising masterpieces, characterised by visual illusions and bizarre imagery, are set to grace the Samsung Art Store, bringing the surrealist genius’ creations into the digital realm and onto The Frame TV, a screen that itself doubles as a work of art.

An icon of avant-garde style, Dalí remains a figure of enduring fascination. His artistic legacy, curated by the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí, a cultural institution established by the artist himself, holds the mission of propagating his intellectual, cultural, and artistic contributions both within Spain and abroad.

Dalí’s art juxtaposes the uncanny and the ordinary, and has captivated audiences since his inaugural exhibition in 1925 in Barcelona, Spain.

Clàudia Galli, Art Historian at Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí, says the artist always aspired to reach a broader audience: “One of his greatest desires was to be known and that his art arrived to a wider audience.”

Andrea Fisher-Scherer, Managing Director of Merchandise Licensing at Artists Rights Society, emphasised the importance of the collaboration: “This gives the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí a global stage for sharing Dalí’s dynamic masterpieces and legacy with an entirely new, digitally native generation.”

The selected artworks include The Persistence of Memory (1931), The Temptation of St. Anthony (1946), and Swans Reflecting Elephants (1937).

Born in Figueres, Spain, Dalí’s ground-breaking artistry emerged from the Catalan region, eventually reaching global recognition. His works, often intricate and intriguing, were the product of collaborations with luminaries of his time, including Coco Chanel, Sigmund Freud, and Pablo Picasso.

The surreal master sought to transcend the confines of traditional art spaces, exhibiting his art in Paris, London, and New York, forging an indelible international legacy.

What is The Frame by Samsung?

Available in a range of screen sizes, The Frame TV is designed to be hung like a painting, and when not in use can fool visitors into thinking it’s an artwork. If you take out a subscription to Samsung’s Art Store, you’ll have access to more than 1600 digital artworks to display.

The screen itself has a matte finish to give the illusion of canvas. While the Frame comes with a standard basic black bezel, you can clip on optional art-style bezels, from the minimalist to the elaborate, to emulate gallery artwork.

The smallest Frame is a 32-inch HD screen. Models from 43-inches are 4k QLED. The largest Frame TV is 85-inches. The Frame comes with an external One Connect Box, which links to the screen via a single cable. When not displaying artwork, The Frame functions like any other smart TV.
