Your cabin luggage is about to turn left. New luxury travel suitcase brand Beaglland has launched a stylish high-tech rolling suitcase boasting an innovative construction using premium materials, including recycled carbon fibre.
Named after Darwin’s trip around the world on the HMS Beagle, the sister brand of best-selling iPhone accessories specialist Pitaka, says its new designer carry-on, the FitzRoy X1, is designed primarily for fashion forward business travellers.
It adopts a novel modular design with environmentally friendly materials – and has style in abundance.
The Beaglland FitzRoy X1 was launched last week in Paris, in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower. The Luxe Review was there for an early hands-on.
Speaking at the launch, James Zheng, Beaglland CEO, said, “There has been no revolution, no evolution in the carry-on suitcase market. People say no news is good news, but we see this as a problem. Products are boring and similar, and they’re not easy to repair. Luggage is almost impossible to recycle, since they’re all built with one-piece forming. The FitzRoy X1 is a gamechanger. We believe this is the future suitcase you can buy today.”
All the components of the FitzRoy X1 are fabricated with dedicated moulds. If a panel becomes scratched or damaged, or you simply want to refresh the look, all you need to do is disassemble that part and replace it with a new component. There’s no need to send the entire suitcase back.
“We will provide detailed instructions on how to disassemble for repair purposes.”
This makes production much more cost effective and helps to reduce waste, says the Chinese headquartered company.
“We believe the future of luggage must be more personalised, easier to repair and environmentally friendly. At Beaglland every suitcase is unique and we encourage everyone to personalise as much as possible”
Buyers can choose the colour of the leather finish, the handle and the aluminium alloy frame, even the pattern on specific panels; the sheer number of permutations allow anyone to create a unique travel suitcase.

The FitzRoy X1 luggage dimensions are 39 x 44 x 23cm, and it weighs 4.4kg. It’s larger than a weekend travel bag, but still complies with most luggage size restrictions.
Utilising a mix of magnesium alloy and carbon fibre, the X1 is lightweight yet tough. The handle can be extended to three different lengths (106cm, 101cm and 96cm), and is comfortable to hold. The extension is smooth and assured.
There’s also a handy side carry handle. The X1 has large 80mm silicone wheels to ensure quiet, smooth travel. Manoeuvring one around is a doddle – yes, we did take one for a spin.
Build quality is excellent, and includes a layer of recycled Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) from Expliseat, an aircraft seat manufacturer in Paris.
The leather panels have a lush, tactile feel. Despite the cutting edge materials employed, there’s something classical about the design.
Embedded Non-Newtonian fluid (P4U) eases shock impact to protect fragile items in your luggage while you travel. There’s also a removable folio pouch that quickly lets you take out a laptop or tablet for a security check, a nice touch.
The X1 even interacts with an accompanying app. Tapping the handle of the case can automatically call up the boarding pass on your smartphone. Certainly helpful when you’re wrestling with passports and flight documents. We assume this chip interaction is customisable, although this wasn’t made clear at the launch.
If you’re looking for carry-on luggage with a USB port, you’ll need to look elsewhere though. There’s no charging port provided.
The FitzRoy X1 will be available in white flax and black carbon fibre finishes as standard, but a number of other premium colourways are planned. For the ultimate in personalisation, Beaglland is also offering the option of custom name or text engraving on the handle.
The standard white and black Fitzroy X1 business travel suitcase sells for £899. Custom editions start at £999. For more visit Beaglland here.
