Celebrities and footballers raise millions to fight COVID-19, just by playing FIFA

Stars from the worlds of music, football and esports have come together to raise more than $10million for charities fighting COVID-19, by playing FIFA 20 in the biggest charity esports tournament in history.

Facing off in the Gamers Without Borders charity event, musicians and footballers played against each other in online matches to raise money for coronavirus relief. As part of the virtual tournament, Snoop Dogg took on talk show host, DJ and comedian Kerwin Frost, Dele Alli played Paulo Dybala, while Trent Alexander-Arnold played musician Liam Payne, and Portugal’s Joao Felix and Andre Silva were pitted against each other, too.

The online charity exhibition matches played alongside the FIFA 20 professional players, uniting more than 150,000 pro and amateur gamers from around the world, with the final matches taking place this week.

Paulo Dybala showed his appreciation for Liverpool as he sung a rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” during his FIFA 20 match against Dele Alli, before beating him on the virtual pitch. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s own Trent Alexander-Arnold won against One Direction’s Liam Payne in their matches.

“There was just nothing I could do against his shots, it was like a magnet,” Liam Payne said in the post-match interview, “It’s such a great cause and we all love playing games – it’s one of the best things.”

“So to be able to do that and make money for unfortunate people at the same time, what an absolute winner – it’s just absolutely amazing to be a part of it,” the singer added.
