1917, Bad Boys For Life and Little Women are our Rakuten TV highlights for May

Video on Demand service Rakuten TV is dropping some big box office titles in May, including  Oscar and BAFTA award-winning war epic 1917, powerful drama Bombshell, Will Smith action-comedy sequel Bad Boys for Life and Greta Gerwig’s critically applauded adaptation of Little Women.

It’s also screening Cats. All are available in 4k HDR.

Debuting May 4, Sam Mendes’s 1917 tells the story of two courageous soldiers during WW1, charged with a race-against-time mission to deliver a message to stop 1,600 troops from walking into an ambush. The movie garnered ten nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards, with a trio of wins for Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, and Best Sound Mixing.

In Bombshell (available from May 11), Charlize Theron puts in a powerhouse turn as Fox News news presenter Megyn Kelly, as she challenges Fox News head Roger Ailes and the toxic atmosphere he presides over at the network. The movie co-stars Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie.

Also critically well received, Little Women (May 11), based on the classic novel by Louisa May Alcott, is well worth a watch. It stars Florence Pugh, Saoirse Ronan and Emma Watson.

Will Smith’s box office hit, co-starring Martin Lawrence, Bad Boys For Life  (May 11) sees our buddy cops facing off against mother-and-son drug lords. Expect quips and chaos.

There’s also an opportunity to judge for yourself just how bad, or misunderstood, box office dud Cats is. The feline musical flop is available May 22.

Finally, the Tom Hanks vehicle A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood arrives May 25, available in 4k HDR, alongside monochrome chiller The Lighthouse. Not recommended as a double bill.
