Streaming service Starzplay has picked up anti-historical drama The Great, from the writer of The Favourite. Hailed as genre-bending, the show is due to land Summer 2020.
Written by Oscar-nominated Tony McNamara, The Great is described as a satirical retelling of the rise of Catherine the Great, documenting her life from outsider to the longest reigning female ruler in Russia’s history. Accuracy is apparently not a given.
The series stars Elle Fanning in the title role, with Nicholas Hoult, alongside Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Sebastian de Souza, Bayo Gbadamosi and Belinda Bromilow.
In the US, The Great will screen on Hulu.
“The Great has everything that Starzplay looks to offer our global audience who has come to expect premium content from us,” says Superna Kalle, EVP, Starz International Digital Networks.
Starzplay is currently home to the Batman prequel Pennyworth, DC’s Doom Patrol, the upcoming second season of the psychological horror series from Stephen King and J.J. Abrams Castle Rock, as well as a range of Starz originals available as they launch in the US.
