Louis XIII Cognac has unveiled Black Pearl: Tribute to the birthplace of Louis XIII, the latest highly limited expression in its prestigious Black Pearl cognac collection. Just 398 decanters are being released worldwide, each priced at £21,000.
The new release takes its inspiration from Le Grollet, the historic cellar that has played a defining role in the House’s history, and remains closely associated with generations of Louis XIII Cellar Masters.
Louis XIII Cognac is made from eaux-de-vie sourced from Cognac Grande Champagne, blended and matured over many years.
For this release, an exceptionally rare eau-de-vie was selected by Cellar Master Baptiste Loiseau from the House’s historic collection of demijohns. It’s the only eau-de-vie in the collection identified as carrying the distinctive character of Le Grollet, a quality passed down to Loiseau by his predecessor, Pierrette Trichet.
Loiseau then infused the eau-de-vie in a single tierçon from the cellar to create this singular blend.

Louis XIII decanter and Cooling Cellar
Black Pearl: Tribute to the birthplace of Louis XIII is housed in a reimagined version of the Louis XIII decanter, albeit with a darker glass, said to reflect the cellar that inspired the liquid inside.
What’s more, each decanter is presented in a bespoke Cooling Cellar, allowing the liquid to rest at a temperature below ambient, down to a minimum of 13°C; said to reproduce the natural conditions in which the Cellar Master experiences the spirit at Le Grollet.
At this cooler temperature, the Black Pearl is described as dense and velvety, with aromas and flavours of beeswax, honey, precious wood and patchouli. The house says the experience evokes the earthen floor of the cellar and the scent of ancient oak surrounding its historic tierçons.
As the cognac gradually reaches ambient temperature, its character is said to develop notes of warm spice, nutmeg, richer rancio, and hints of chocolate.
In the UK, cognac lovers will have the opportunity to experience the temperature-driven ritual at a select group of luxury hospitality venues, including The Dorchester, The St. Regis, Grantley Hall and A. Wong.
The release will also be available exclusively through the Louis XIII Boutique at Harrods, priced at £21,000.
