1800 Tequila unveils $11,000 tequila designed by Mexican surrealist Pedro Friedeberg

1800 Tequila Coleccion

A sculptural new Extra Añejo from 1800 Tequila turns a rare tequila release into an art collectible, with just 50 Pedro Friedeberg-designed decanters available worldwide.

1800 Tequila has unveiled Mono Laberinto Doble, the most visually striking addition to its 1800 Colección series. Priced at $11,000, the limited-edition release brings together aged tequila and Mexican contemporary art in a format aimed squarely at collectors.

The collaboration has particular significance because Friedeberg, the celebrated Mexican surrealist, died in 2023. Mono Laberinto Doble was among the final projects he completed. His relationship with 1800 Tequila dates back to 2017, when he became the inaugural artist for the brand’s 1800 Milenio Artist Series in Mexico.

At the heart of the release is a bespoke nickel decanter. Its intricate lines, geometric forms and layered motifs create a sculptural object that complements the distinctive pyramid-shaped 1800 bottle.

The pyramid itself references Mexico’s Mayan heritage. Friedeberg takes that established visual and pushes it into something more surreal.

Only 50 examples have been produced. Each comes with an official art certificate.

Inside 1800 Tequila’s extraordinary Mono Laberinto Doble

The release of Mono Laberinto Doble continues a tradition within 1800 Colección of pairing rare tequila with bespoke vessels created by artists and cultural figures. Previous editions have featured work by Bosco Sodi, Leonora Carrington, Gary Baseman and Hector Velazquez.

Patrick Charpenel, Executive Director of El Museo del Barrio, describes Mono Laberinto Doble as a tribute to Friedeberg’s legacy and to the synergy between 1800 Tequila and Mexican artistry.

As for the liquid, 1800 Colección is produced only in the finest production years and uses 100% blue Weber agave harvested at peak maturity in the Tequila Valley. The agave is slow-cooked in traditional masonry ovens before fermentation and double distillation in copper pot stills.

It’s then aged for at least three years in a combination of new American oak casks with medium and high char and French oak casks that previously held Amarone wine. The resulting Extra Añejo, bottled at 40% ABV, is described as having layers of oak, cooked agave, honey, prune and subtle vanilla.

Mono Laberinto Doble is also featured in The Art of Tequila: Spirit of Mexico, a new luxury book from Assouline exploring the relationship between tequila, Mexican art, craftsmanship and culture. Friedeberg and his work feature prominently in the book, alongside 1800 Tequila’s collaborations with artists including Bosco Sodi and Leonora Carrington.
