Whiskies inspired by House Targaryen
Founded in 2014, Kyrö Distillery has earned international recognition for its distinctive approach to whisky and gin production, so expectations are high.
Kyrö Whisky of Fire is produced from 100% smoked malted rye, and matured in ex-bourbon casks before receiving a finishing period in rum casks. Bottled at 46.6% ABV, it boasts a smoky and richly layered character. On the nose, expect gentle smoke mingled with toasted rye and spiced apple jam. The palate offers notes of mineral smoke, sweet grains, blackberry and a subtle hint of menthol.
Its companion release, Kyrö Whisky of Blood, takes a more restrained approach while retaining plenty of depth. Made from 100% malted rye and matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and French oak casks, it’s bottled at 46.0% ABV.
The aroma opens with bright cereal notes alongside apple and apricot, supported by hints of tonka bean, chestnut and beeswax. On the palate, fruity sweetness combines with gentle rye spice before developing into flavours of chestnut, crème brûlée and toasted cereals.
According to Kyrö co-founder and master distiller Kalle Valkonen, the aim was to create whiskies that felt genuinely connected to the world of Game of Thrones. Rather than producing simple branded releases, the distillery sought to interpret different aspects of House Targaryen’s character through flavour, maturation and style.
Both expressions are presented in collectible packaging inspired by Westeros cartography and the visual language of the television franchise. The designs combine fantasy-inspired artwork with Kyrö’s contemporary Scandinavian aesthetic, making the bottles likely to appeal to fans of the show as well as whisky enthusiasts.
The Game of Thrones x Kyrö Whiskies of Fire and Blood are available from Master of Malt, priced at £74.95. A twin-pack containing both expressions is available for £149.95.
