Italian cooking brand Smeg has introduced a new generation of countertop microwave ovens, which combine culinary functionality with characteristic design flair.
The MOC01 microwave with grill, and the MOC02 combination model with grill, oven and air fry, have been conceived very much as everyday cooking tools rather than simple reheating devices.
With a standardised a full stainless-steel interior, designed to distribute microwave energy more evenly, and advanced inverter technology, cooks are promised fewer hotspots, improved moisture retention and greater precision at lower settings, useful for sauces, defrosting proteins or gently reheating leftovers without overcooking the edges.
There’s even a dough-proving function, gently accelerating the rise of bread and pizza bases. Automatic programmes cover defrosting, heating and cooking.
Offered in matte black, white, emerald green and storm blue, the new microwaves are designed to coordinate with the wider Collezione countertop family, creating a unified look across the brand’s small appliances.

MOC01: Grill capability in a compact format
The MOC01 is the more straightforward of the pair. With a 29-litre capacity and 18 automatic programmes, it’s sized to accommodate family dishes, such as pasta bakes or jacket potatoes. But it also has a relatively compact footprint for kitchens where worktop space is at a premium.
In addition to standard microwave functions, a dedicated grill mode allows for browning and crisping. Supplied with a high grill rack, it promotes even surface colouring on gratins, vegetables or open sandwiches. Multi-step programming enables microwave, defrost and grill stages to run consecutively in a single cycle, so a dish can cook through before finishing under the grill without manual adjustment. Clever stuff.
MOC02: Combination cooking with air fry
The step-up MOC02 brings together microwave, grill, fan oven and air fry functions in one 27-litre unit. With 25 automatic recipes and three combination modes, it’s designed to adapt to a wide range of dishes and portion sizes.
Combination cooking uses microwave energy alongside fan oven or grill heat. This approach reduces overall cooking time while delivering the surface finish associated with conventional oven use.
A salmon fillet, for example, can be cooked in around 10 minutes, while multi-step programming allows a joint of pork to roast and then finish with a final burst of grill heat to crisp the crackling.
The on-trend integrated air fry function produces crisp results with minimal oil, removing the need for a separate gadget. Accessories including a crisp pan, high grill rack and dedicated air fry basket broaden its repertoire, from homemade chips to panko-coated chicken or baked desserts.
Available now, the MOC01 and MOC02 microwaves are priced at £349.95 (€399.95), and £449.95 (€529.95) respectively.
