Jeff Wayne’s The War of the Worlds Immersive Experience sets Guinness World Record

Jeff Wayne at the War of the Worlds show

It’s official: Jeff Wayne’s The War of the Worlds: The Immersive Experience has been recognised by Guinness World Records as the longest theatrical run of a musical immersive theatre production, boasting more than 31,000 performances (and counting) since its launch in 2019.

Created by immersive entertainment specialists Layered Reality in collaboration with visionary composer Jeff Wayne, the show blends live actors, virtual reality, holograms, 5D effects, and Wayne’s celebrated musical adaptation of H.G. Wells’ Victorian invasion tale.

Across 24 intricately designed scenes, visitors are swept through a world of Martian tripods, Victorian parlours, and post-apocalyptic London streets, all to the pulse of Wayne’s iconic score.

Since its debut, the production has welcomed over 300,000 visitors and collected 14 major awards, including five consecutive TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards and a coveted Thea Award, often described as the “Oscars of the interactive industry.”

Prog rock meets the apocalypse

First published in 1898, H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds has had a profound cultural footprint, spanning literature, radio, film, and music.

Wells’ original novel, telling of a Martian invasion of Earth that devastates Victorian England, is a classic of science fiction. In 1938, Orson Welles’ famously adapted the yarn into a radio drama, sparking panic across America as some listeners believed the invasion was real.

George Pal’s 1953 film version defined the Martian war machines for a generation, while Steven Spielberg’s 2005 reimagined the story as a high concept thriller. Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version, released in 1978, ultimately turned The War of the Worlds into a concept album blending orchestral drama with prog rock.

Speaking at the Guinness World Records presentation at its Leadenhall Street home, Wayne said: “When we first launched, we hoped the show would run for six months. We never imagined it would still be going six years later. To now hold a Guinness World Record is a testament to everyone involved, and to the audiences who keep coming back for more.”

Featuring performances from Justin Hayward (The Moody Blues), Ricky Wilson (Kaiser Chiefs), Nathan James (Inglorious), and holographic cameos from Carrie Hope Fletcher and Tom Brittney, the production continues to evolve, entertaining visitors with its blend of music, theatre, and interactive storytelling.

The Luxe Review paid the show a visit and we had a blast – the attention to detail and sheer gusto of the performers warrants two Martian thumbs up.

Whether you’re a fan of Jeff Wayne’s best-selling concept album, or simply looking for a unique cultural experience, in the heart of the City, this (now record-setting) immersive adventure is well worth a visit.
