There’s a special kind of magic when technology and art collide, especially when one half of that equation is Leica. In a world where smartphone cameras are constantly outdoing one another, it’s refreshing to see a partnership that puts creativity centre stage.
Enter the Xiaomi 15 Series, created by Chinese tech giant Xiaomi, co-engineered with the legendary camera company, led by the flagship 15 Ultra.
Synonymous with optics, colour science, and design, Leica has long been the choice of photojournalists and purists alike. By bringing Leica lenses and imaging knowhow into its flagship mobiles, Xiaomi isn’t just looking to improve your Instagram game, it’s aiming to democratize next-gen smartphone photography.
The collaboration culminated in a showcase event this month at the Leica store in London’s Mayfair, where Leica Ambassador and visual storyteller Alixe Lay led a hands-on tour of the Xiaomi 15 Ultra’s pictorial prowess.
As Lay described it, “The Xiaomi 15 Series lets me focus on the story. It’s powerful, responsive, and most importantly, it doesn’t get in the way of the moment…”
What’s under the hood?
A pocket powerhouse, the flagship Xiaomi 15 Ultra features a 6.73-inch LTPO AMOLED display with a 1440×3200 resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and Dolby Vision support. It runs on Android 15 with HyperOS 2, powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset.
The quad camera setup comprises 50MP (wide), 50MP (telephoto, 3x zoom), 200MP (periscope, 4.3x zoom), and 50MP (ultrawide) lens. Up front there’s a 32MP selfie camera.
Features look certain to woo photographers. Utilising custom Leica Summilux optics, a variable aperture allows users to switch settings on the fly. Want creamy bokeh in low light? Dial it wide open. Need depth of field in broad daylight? Stop it down for detail from foreground to skyline.
A 1-inch LYT-900 image sensor, used for its 50MP main camera, enhances low-light performance and dynamic range. Shadows carry more detail, highlights aren’t blown out. The smartphone also boasts Professional Portrait and Cinematic modes. The potential for creativity is high.
As Alixe Lay demonstrated with her own work, this is a smartphone that doesn’t just shoot well. As Xiaomi’s own Jia Wei puts it, “It isn’t just technology, it’s an invitation to tell stories with authenticity, precision, and beauty.”
The Xiaomi 15 Ultra smartphone is available in the UK via mi.com, prices start at £1,299.
