Transforming the yachting experience: Samsung sets sail for the future with SmartThings for Ships

Samsung Smartthings for Ships model at CES

Samsung has set a new course for maritime innovation, unveiling its SmartThings for Ships technology at CES 2025. Known for revolutionising smart home connectivity, Samsung is now making waves by extending its IoT ecosystem to yachts, cruise ships, and beyond.

SmartThings, Samsung’s connected platform, has long been a pioneer in smart home automation. From security systems to entertainment devices and appliances, the technology has simplified daily life for over a decade.

Now Samsung sees similar long term potential in the maritime industry.

Working in conjunction with Matter, the open-source smart home standard, SmartThings for Ships aims to transform and unify every aspect of maritime life, from streamlined check-ins to complete onboard control. Yacht passengers, for instance, will be able to scan a QR code upon boarding to receive real-time updates on departure and arrival times, locations, and even get emergency health alerts.

Once onboard, passengers can control cabin devices through their smartphones, delivering the same convenience they enjoy at home. For vacationers chartering yachts, this familiarity promises a more seamless and luxurious experience.

For yacht owners, SmartThings offers an intuitive dashboard on Samsung displays, granting comprehensive control over vessel systems; from monitoring air purifiers, lighting, and entertainment systems to managing motion and humidity sensors, the platform can ensure yacht operations run smoothly.

What sets SmartThings apart is its scalability. The technology isn’t limited to private yachts, it can be deployed on ferries, cruise ships, container ships, and even LNG carriers. Fleet managers, for example, can use a centralised monitoring station to oversee multiple vessels, ensuring peak performance and safety at all times.

The versatility of the system looks equally impressive. The platform enables control of navigation lights, anchor lights, and emergency NUC lights while also providing detailed navigational logs and real-time energy management for fuel and electricity. With SmartThings Pro, operators can automate air quality monitoring within the hull and even remotely control electric outboard motors.

Samsung Heavy Industries has already equipped a test vessel with the SmartThings platform, showcasing a scaled-down model of the ship at CES 2025. I took part in an interactive demonstration that highlighted the technology’s transformative potential, and it’s impressive.

By bringing its signature SmartThings ecosystem to the seas, Samsung is not just enhancing the luxury of yachts but also redefining efficiency and safety across the maritime industry.

Whether you’re a yacht owner seeking smarter management tools or an enthusiast dreaming of a futuristic voyage, this innovation signals the dawn of a smarter, more connected future on the water.
