Game of Thrones Auction: Costumes, props and memorabilia go on display in London

Game of Thrones Dragon Egg

The biggest TV show in the world is now the mother of all auctions, as props, costumes and artefacts from HBO’s Game of Thrones series come up for auction, with everything from White Walker masks to Westeros weaponry going under the hammer.

Heritage Auctions has worked closely with the Game of Thrones team in Belfast over the past year to curate the auction. With more than 900 lots, there’s something for every GoT fan. Even smaller items are expected to go for high prices as collectors scramble to own a piece of TV history.

The Luxe Review went to the London preview to take a closer look at some of the treasures up for grabs. Attending the event was actor Isaac Hempstead Wright, who played Bran Stark.

Quite aside from the spectacular costumes, worn by the likes of Emilia Clarke and Peter Dinklage, the auction throws a fresh light onto the incredible detail of the show’s production design.

The intricate carvings of Robb Stark’s Map Markers, used throughout Season 2 by Stark (Richard Madden) in his war against the Lannisters, are gorgeous. The lot includes representations of the Lannister lion, the Stark Wolf, Greyjoy Kraken and the Bolton Red Flayed man.

For those with a taste for the macabre, there’s a set of two full head silicone masks, sculpted and painted with alarming detailing, and featuring sewn-in synthetic hair. They were used throughout the series, as the reanimated corpses of the dead who massed north of The Wall.

For a rather different centrepiece, how about the Seven Houses Chalice from Season 4, episode 2?  Made from rubber and resin painted gold, with faux gemstone accents, it depicts the seven sigils of the main houses.

Two ‘horns’ curve around the cup. In the show, Mace Tyrell (Roger Ashton-Griffiths) gives this chalice to his daughter, Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer), and son-in-law, Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson), as a wedding gift.

Also on display at the Game of Thrones auction preview was Arya Stark’s rapier,  the Needle. The weapon is actually made from high-density rubber over a wire armature. The Needle was given to Arya Stark by half-brother Jon Snow in Season 1, and is a motif throughout the series.

According to showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the Needle was “not just a weapon; it’s a link to Arya’s family and her identity.”

And yes, you can bid on Daenerys’s dragon eggs too.

All seasons of Game of Thrones and its sequel series House of the Dragon are available to stream on Sky and NOW.

The items will be auctioned in Dallas, and online, October 10, 11 and 12. The Game of Throne Auction Preview is open to the public in the run up to the event, at the Heritage Auctions London showroom, 10 Hanover Street.
