Irish whiskey meets Italian wine in this Gold Spot The Generations limited edition single pot still gem

A bottle of Gold Spot The Generations Edition with candles

Two generational wine families have come together to bring a splash of colour to the world of Irish whiskey. Gold Spot The Generations Edition, from Irish Distillers, is a limited-edition single pot still Irish whiskey, which marries Gold Spot’s signature use of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, with a unique final maturation in Valpolicella Classica Italian wine casks.

This final 16 month long maturation is said to elevate Gold Spot’s subtle spice notes, with the red wine adding layers of dark fruits, and sweet berry compote.

The second offering in the Gold Spot series, following on from the nine-year-old Gold Spot inaugural launch, celebrates seven generations of the Mitchell family, guardians of Spot Whiskey and one of Ireland’s premier wine families.

This final 16 month long maturation is said to elevate Gold Spot’s subtle spice notes…

This expression is matured in Italian wine casks from Valpolicella Classica, selected from the Secondo Marco winery, a company founded by Marco Speri whose passion stems from the oenological heritage of his family, who have worked the soils of Valpolicella for seven generations to produce world-class wines.

Secondo Marco’s casks, sourced from Fumane in the heart of the Valpolicella Classica winemaking region, infuse this Gold Spot expression with a distinctive wine-driven character that enhances Gold Spot’s more traditional, fruit-forward flavour profile.

Tasting notes recount red apples and dark fleshy fruits on the nose, with fragrant blossom and woody undertones. On the palate, Gold Spot The Generations Edition is lush and fruity, with toffee apple and raisins to the fore. The finish lingers, with sweet wine and pot still spices.

The unique Spot whiskey branding dates back to the 1800s when empty wine and fortified wine casks were sent to the local Jameson Distillery in Bow Street to be filled with new single pot still spirit for maturation in its underground cellars. Once filled, these casks were then daubed with coloured paint, this ‘spot’ signalling the age of the whiskey within.

Non-chill filtered, Gold Spot The Generations Edition is bottled at 46% ABV. It’s available in limited quantities, priced at €150.
