Nokia phone maker HMD (Human Mobile Devices), will launch a Barbie flip phone in partnership with Mattel this summer, the brand confirmed this week at Mobile World Congress.

Europe’s largest phone manufacturer will create the Barbie Flip Phone, as part of a strategic shift that will see Nokia embark on a series of creative partnerships.

Global toy company Mattel has a portfolio of family entertainment franchises in the world, which it has begun to mine with spectacular effect. The Greta Gerwig directed movie, based on the fashion doll, was a cultural phenomenon in 2023.

HMD says its Barbie Flip Phone will embody the vintage chic of the original doll, proudly pink with plenty of sparkle.

Head of Consumer Products, Publishing, and LBE, Mattel EMEA, Ruth Henriquez declares: “At the heart of Mattel is design and innovation, and this latest collaboration is another step forward in that direction. The Barbie x HMD launch promises to be an exciting moment for Barbie fans of all ages.”

So-called ‘Feature’ Flip phones are being positioned as a digital detox device. Research reveals that almost four in ten (38 per cent) of 16-24 year-olds worry they spend too much time on their smartphone.

Gen Z are reportedly the only generation whose daily time on social media has fallen since Q1 2021.

HMD says Flip Phone sales more than doubled in Europe in 2023, and it expects further growth in 2024.

HMD Chief Marketing Office, Lars Silberbauer, adds: “Is it time to swap reel life for real life and take a breather from all the interruptions of notifications? We’re thrilled to partner with Mattel, a company that shares our commitment to meaningful innovation and societal change.”
