British watch company Marloe has released its first square-faced timepiece, the Astro.
Inspired by the Apollo 11 moon landing of 1969, and designer Gordon Fraser’s lifelong interest in space exploration, the Astro is available in four designs, each offering a host of strap and face combinations, adorned with Marloe’s signature ‘M’ logo.
Choose from the Valentina, named after Russian cosmonaut Valentina Vladimirovna – its brass accents suggest the aesthetics of the red side of the space race: the Eagle, an homage to Apollo’s lunar module, with a jet black face and contrasting orange chapter ring; the Hadfield, named after astronaut and ISS commander Colonel Chris Hadfield, in a deep navy colourway with orange accents, and Futura, with smart white face and polished-steel hands.
Wearers can mix and match different straps, with rubber and Velcro options.
The Marloe Eagle is an homage to Apollo 11’s iconic lunar module…
Fine detail and finish appear high. Beneath the Marloe watch’s 4:3 ratio sapphire crystal, with a dual side anti-reflective coating, reside multi-layered dials and textured faces, all drawing on Marloe’s central space theme.
The hexagonal finish apparently references Stanley Kubrick’s Sci-Fi classic 2001: A Space Odyssey, while the crosshairs on the underside of the crystal emulate the calibration marks that appear in lunar photography.
Every aspect of the Astro watch has been crafted by Marloe, we’re told, with no stock parts or components used.
The Marloe Astro watch sells for £349, and is available from Marloe online.
