WoodenSTEEL is the brainchild of brother-in-law design duo Alexander Waugh and Lee Winter.
From their Kent based design studio and workshop, the pair’s precisely engineered designs can be found across the UK, with over 15 years’ of specially commissioned projects, including installations for All Saints flagships, The Science Museum, Wharf Kitchen, Battersea Arts Centre and Oxford & Cambridge Club.
“We both joined my father’s family-owned business at the start of our careers,” explains Waugh. “We are engineers by trade. We’ve worked on challenging fabrication 4-year long installations 42m high up and with that comes the need to understand the raw materials we work with and how to get the most out of them.”
Metal is the company’s signature material, complemented by wooden textures. Each design is handcrafted with a variety of premium finishes, some deliberately distressed, others sleek and industrial. All are designed to withstand British weather.
“Steel is one of our favourite materials to use for many reasons, but it’s not just about the materials. Our designs are centred around enjoyment and gathering with family and friends. We come from a large close-knit family of 17 with seven boys under the age of 10 and so we understand the desire for robust, long-lasting furniture design in more ways than one! Our ethos caters for both indoors and out, not only for everyday life but also within commercial spaces too.”
