Cinemas may have been shuttered for the best part of 2020, but a large number of this year’s 93rd Academy Awards nominations are available to view at home on streaming services right now.
Netflix is dominating the nominations, securing 35 nods, its highest haul to date. This is good news for streaming addicts.
The biggest earner is David Fincher’s black and white showpiece Mank, with 10 nominations, including Best Picture. Gary Oldman and Amanda Seyfried pocketed acting noms, with Fincher laying claim to Best Director.
Another Netflix critics pleaser, Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7, picked up six nominations, including one for Sacha Baron Cohen’s supporting turn, and another for Sorkin’s blistering screenplay.
Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom bagged five nods, Chadwick Boseman nominated posthumously.
Also lauded, and currently available to view on Netflix, are The White Tiger, animation Over the Moon and documentary Crip Camp.
Rival Amazon Studios won 12 nominations, with its The Sound of Metal earning six, including Best Picture and a Best Actor nod for star Riz Ahmed. The movie lands on Prime Video April 12. Also in the potential winner’s column are Borat Subsequent Moviefilm and One Night at Miami, both available to view on Prime Video now.
Andra Day was nominated for her performance as jazz icon Billie Holiday in the biographical The United States Vs. Billie Holiday, which is currently available on Sky Cinema and NOW, with a NOW Cinema Membership.
Similarly, Best Picture nominee Judas and the Black Messiah is currently available on various premium video on demand services.
Disney+ bagged Best animated feature nods for Onward and Soul, with the latter also warranting Best Score and Sound nominations. Mulan received nominations for costumes and VFX. The One and Only Ivan also won a visual effects nomination. All these titles are currently available to watch on Disney Plus. Nomadland, nominated for Best Picture, will be available to stream on the Disney platform, as part of its Star offering, from April 30.
Currently available to watch on Apple TV+ are Best Animated feature nominee Wolfwalkers and Greyhound, nominated for Sound.
