Family-owned Lochlea Distillery has announced its second annual Red Wine Cask release, offering a rich, fruit-forward take on modern Scotch. This showcase for the farm-to-cask distillery’s distinctive approach to cask management joins Lochlea’s core Single Estate range, launched last summer.
The Red Wine Cask series is an annual limited-edition inspired by the art of finishing mature spirit in carefully selected red wine casks, chosen from different wine-making regions. Each year introduces a distinct expression, shaped by the character of the wine casks chosen, with just a limited number of bottles available.

For Red Wine Cask 2026, Lochlea has taken whisky initially matured in first-fill Bourbon barrels and finished it in Sangiovese wine casks from Tuscany. The result is said to be a rich and velvety dram, offering layers of sweetness and complexity.
Bottled at 46% ABV, with natural colour and non-chill filtered, buyers can expect aromas of red berries, baked apples, and notes of honey with gentle spice, while the palate delivers abundant red berry and nutty flavours, leading to a finish defined by soft spice and a pleasant oakiness.
Lochlea is one of only two Scotch distilleries to grow its own barley on-site. Every stage of production is carried out at the distillery in Ayrshire. This end-to-end control ensures consistency, provenance and a distinctive house character – sweetness, spice and fruit-forward richness – across all its releases.
Lochlea Red Wine Cask 2026 will be available from specialist whisky retailers from May 28, priced at £55.
