Long anticipated, Sony has finally unveiled its latest iteration of the PlayStation 5, a sleeker and more compact design with a novel new feature.
The first noticeable difference is its size – the new model sports a 30 per cent reduction in volume and weighs 18 to 24 per cent less, depending on the edition.
For those who opt for the Digital Edition, there’s the option to upgrade to the standard edition by attaching a separate disc drive, available for £99 in the UK ($79.99 in the US). So, if you ever feel like your gaming needs a physical touch, the upgrade is just a Blu-ray disc drive away.
Sony has made it clear that the new PS5 will replace the previous generation once the remaining consoles of the older model have been sold. This means that the new PS5, with all its sleek updates, will soon be the only model available.

The console’s overall design remains largely unchanged, with four separate cover panels and a glossy top portion paired with a matte bottom. However, there are now clear slits on either side between the panes, adding an element of flair. Plus, it comes with dual USB-C ports at the front, upping the convenience factor.
Both new editions include 1TB of storage, a welcome upgrade from the previous model’s 825GB. With more space to store your games and content, you can game to your heart’s content without worrying about storage issues.
Additionally, Sony is offering a range of console cover colours starting in early 2024. From an all-matte Black colourway to the stylish Deep Earth Collection colours in Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue, and Sterling Silver, you can match your PS5 with your personal style.
For those who want to further personalise their PS5, detachable panels in alternative colours will be available. The panels will be priced at £44.99 ($54.99).
The new PS5 arrives just in time for a slew of exciting game releases, including Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
Whether you’re a serious gamer or just enjoy some casual gaming, Sony’s new PS5 ‘Slim’ looks difficult to resist.
