Balblair 21 Year Old Single Malt Whisky is a masterful medley of tropical fruits and dark chocolate

A bottle of Balblair 21 Year Old Single Malt on a table

Balblair, the venerable Highland single malt Scotch distillery, is inviting whisky lovers on a sensory journey with its latest expression: the Balblair 21 Year Old Single Malt whisky.

This premium release stands as a testament to patience, dedication, and the indelible artistry that defines the traditional whisky-making process; a dram for those who appreciate the finest things in life.

Nestled amidst the captivating landscapes of the Scottish Highlands, the Balblair distillery boasts a rich history, dating back to 1790. It stands as the oldest working distillery in the heart of the Northern Scottish Highlands, surrounded by unspoiled beauty and steeped in tradition.

The distillery’s location near the serene Dornoch Firth, shadowed by the formidable Struie Hill, is as picturesque as it gets, providing an appropriate backdrop for the creation of this exceptional whisky.

This premium release is an offering to those who appreciate the finest things in life…

The release of the 21 Year Old expression is hailed as a pinnacle achievement for this historic distillery.

A journey through time, the story of this expression begins with carefully selected American oak ex-bourbon barrels, where the spirit spends its first fifteen years maturing.

But the real magic happens during the subsequent six years of ageing in handpicked Spanish oak butts, seasoned with Oloroso wine. This extended maturation process weaves together spiced, fruity flavours that dance on the palate.

Balblair 21 Year Old Single Malt Whisky tasting notes

The prestigious expression was launched at a Black Tie tasting event held in the iconic Greenwich Royal Observatory. During the evening, we were invited to sample a quartet of Single Malts from the distillery, each an evolution on the other, culminating in this latest expression.

The Balblair 21 Year Old is a luxurious golden amber hue and proves generous on the nose, with pineapples and roasted bananas providing a warm tropical welcome. On the palette we noted bitter Seville oranges atop the exotic fruit cocktail with notes of dark chocolate.

The Balblair 21 Year Old is bottled with an ABV of 46%. We rare it the epitome of sip and savour.

The inspiration behind this 21 year old is deeply rooted in the Highland terroir that cradles the distillery, we’re told, and locally sourced spring water.

The whisky also bears the mark of hand-selected oak casks, chosen to accentuate the liquid’s complexity.

Unsurprising for a dram of this calibre, the expression will be available in limited quantities. The Balblair 21 Year Old Single Malt whisky makes its debut in the UK, priced at £300, before heading to specialist whisky retailers in Europe, North America, and Asia in the coming months.
