LG MoodUP smart fridge with LED panels and built-in sound system is cool for cats

The LG MoodUP LED screen fridge at IFA 2022 in full camo mode against a wall of bright lights

LG has unveiled a fridge with colour-changing LED door panels and a built-in sound system. The stylish MoodUP kitchen appliance made its debut at the IFA 2022 tech expo, and proved to be a real attention grabber.

The MoodUP reflects the trend toward open plan living and multifunctional spaces. It doesn’t just put on the style. It also boasts advanced refrigeration and smart technologies for better food freshness.

We took a closer look at it on the show floor, and believe it could revolutionise kitchen design – or at the very least, add a whole new level of cool to your kitchenette.

Using the LG ThinQ app, you can match the colour of the fridge to seasons, decor or special occasions. Colour themes include Season, Place, Mood and Pop.

There’s a choice of 22 colours for the upper door panel and 19 colours for the lower, giving you the ability to change both the look of the fridge and your kitchen area.

LG MoodUp refrigerator goes full camouflage at IFA 2022

The refrigerator has a built-in Bluetooth sound system. Just pair the fridge to your smartphone and stream as you would with any wireless speaker. We tried to give it a listen at the show, but the general hubbub of the booth pretty much drowned it out. Let’s assume it sounds better than the fridge you already own.

Somewhere deep inside is an AI chip that also supports voice recognition and Wi-Fi. Naturally.

When the refrigerator’s door sensor detects that the fridge compartment has been left open for too long, the panel on the door left open blinks repeatedly.  Motion sensors also detect that someone is approaching, and both panels blink in welcome.

It can even offer help based on the time of day: at night, the freezer door apparently glows a little brighter should you want to grab a snack.

With its LED door panels switched off, the MoodUP refrigerator reverts to a more traditional colour combo of Lux Gray and Lux White.

Stay tuned for news on a UK launch date for the MoodUP.
