Streaming audio giant Spotify has announced a multi-year, multi-series content deal with AGBO, Anthony and Joe Russo’s entertainment company, and thrown some more light on its partnership with DC during its online Stream On showcase.
The Russo Brothers, directors of Marvel blockbusters Captain America: Civil War; Avengers: Infinity War; and Avengers: endgame. We’ve yet to hear in-depth detail on their first Spotify project, but listeners can expect all-new universe building from the creative team.
The first DC narrative podcast project, Batman Unburied, will be released on Spotify later this year. The new original story is being executive produced by David S. Goyer (writer on Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, amongst multiple other genre movies and TV shows).
DC Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee also confirmed that the next wave of DC comics characters to get the podcast treatment will include Superman, Lois Lane, Wonder Woman, Joker, Catwoman, The Riddler, Batgirl, and Harley Quinn.
The projects will bring a cinematic approach to narrative storytelling, making full use of surround sound technology.

Sportify partners with universe-building Russo Bros
David S. Goyer said: “”I’ve been fortunate to have a hand in how audiences see Batman and now it’s really fun to have a hand in shaping how audiences hear Batman. We’re going to be doing a deep dive into Batman’s unconscious mind, into his dream state. We are really leaning into playing around with the idea of surround sound. One particular member of the Batman’s rogues gallery is very, very creepy, so the idea of that character, literally leaning over the listener’s shoulder and whispering things to them – I think it’s going to be particularly nightmarish.”
Jim Lee, the Chief Creative Officer of DC, said of the Batman podcast: “The types of stories you can tell with that character are pretty broad, so it allows David I think to explore some of the suspense, thriller side of Batman, do something different in a new format. I think the fan base is just going to respond to this in an exciting way. Embrace it as something new and novel, and supplements all the other ways they take in the DC Universe.”
In related news, Spotify also used Stream On to confirm that it will finally launch a high resolution music service. Scheduled to launch later this year, Spotify says its HiFi stream will deliver music in ‘CD-quality, lossless audio format’ both to its smartphone app and Spotify Connect-enabled speakers. Spotify says it is working with ‘some of the world’s biggest speaker manufacturers.’
