The Whisky Exchange has released two new exclusive bottlings for August, each showcasing a distinct style of single cask Scotch. From a mature Speyside heavyweight to a youthful Highland innovator, the pair offers contrasting but equally compelling takes on contemporary whisky-making.
The new arrivals comprise an 18-year-old GlenAllachie finished in new American oak, and an apple-y seven-year-old Nc’Nean matured in a combination of bourbon and ex-Calvados casks. Both are bottled at cask strength, with limited allocations. Let’s take a closer look…
GlenAllachie Distillery, founded in 1967 near Aberlour in the Speyside region, has earned a reputation for richly flavoured single malts, often shaped by an adventurous cask policy. This 2007 vintage 18-year-old is drawn from a single new American oak cask, selected to complement the distillery’s naturally fruity spirit.
Bottled at a robust 59.1% ABV, the whisky combines weight and texture with a complex layering of flavours. Tasting notes speak of orange cake and gingerbread on the nose, giving way to dark chocolate and a subtle lift of red chilli. The palate is said to be fruity with warm spice. The release is limited to 272 bottles.
Nc’Nean, based on the Morvern peninsula in the Highlands, has built its reputation since 2017 as Scotland’s first fully organic whisky distillery and the first in the UK to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in production. Known for its elegant, unpeated style, the distillery often experiments with cask maturation and fermentation techniques to expand Scotch whisky’s flavour range.
This seven-year-old single cask is part of the Nc’Nean Aon Collection, a series of hand-selected releases. Half of its maturation took place in bourbon casks before being transferred to an ex-Calvados cask for the remainder, so expect a distinctive fruit-forward profile. Bottled at 60.2% ABV, we’re pomised aromas of orchard fruit and sweet spice, giving way to white chocolate, apple sauce, crunchy pears and a peppery finish.
The Calvados influence promises a rounded sweetness that should play well with Nc’Nean’s bright, citrus-led character.
