“There is one thing that separates a major studio from all other content producers: history. At Columbia, that history is reflected in the countless cultural talismans created by thousands of people over now 100 years. All of us at Columbia are proud of that legacy and honoured to celebrate it,” remarked Tom Rothman, Chairman & CEO of Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group.
As part of the celebration, luxury publisher Assouline is set to release a commemorative book that will highlight 100 iconic moments from Columbia Pictures’ illustrious history. The studio has planned an array of festivities, including festival screenings, live concerts featuring prominent film scores, and the debut of curated home entertainment products that pay homage to the extensive scope of the studio’s library. Further details regarding the 100 Year Anniversary celebration will be disclosed throughout the year.
Columbia Pictures, founded by brothers Harry and Jack Cohn along with their best friend Joe Brandt on January 10, 1924, established itself as an elite studio after the success of Frank Capra’s 1934 classic It Happened One Night, which swept the Oscars.
The studio has since been responsible for a myriad of films, from award-winners and timeless classics to pop-culture phenomena. Some of these include It Happened One Night, Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner, Ghostbusters, Lawrence of Arabia, and the Spider-Man series.
